THE FIRST PATENT IN THE CEMENT SECTOR BY OYAK CEMENT GROUP
Bolu Cement, a member of OYAK Cement Group, has realised an innovation in the cement sector by attaining the patent for Alternative Waste Burning Plant.
With the thought of obtaining patent and utility model document, that have been the initial targets of R&D activities, it was determined that the Project was an original model and an application for a research patent was made at the Austrian Patent Institute on March27, 2007 and the patent was granted on December 22, 2008 at the end of the suspension and research periods.
Our Company that received the waste usage licence as a pioneer in the sector, in October 2004, has initiated the first waste burning procedure within the existing system in a feeding style. Because of the undesired air leakage in this system the required fuel savings from the waste energy were not reached. On the other hand, the rotating kiln refractors and coatings were harmed by the waste leakage. Therefore, the technical team of Bolu Cement started a work on a project to provide the maximum utility from the thermal value of the wastes, to counteract the harmful volatile chemicals of the heavy metals by tearing them into pieces. Preparations for a project to define the necessary measurements, calculations and dimensions of the furnace of such capacity to burn wastes, its feeding system, refractory design and integration plan to the kiln.
'Integrated alternative fuel usage' project is developed: the dangerous wastes are burnt in a separate chamber by using the rotating kiln waste heat, where the exhausted waste gas is neutralised in 4 seconds at 1200º C within the existing system and the waste heat is utilised in the process.
The aim of the project is to incinerate dye mud, automobile tyres, liquid chemicals and contaminated wastes that are considered in the dangerous waste class without giving any harm to nature and thus decrease the use of fossil fuel that is one of the main expenditure items of the cement factories. Another benefit is the decrease of greenhouse gas oscillation of fossil fuel origin.
With its annual 12,000 tons/year capacity, the integrated waste incineration system has 48.3 G Cal energy recovery capacity, which is equivalent of 7,500 tons of coal. The investment cost of the project is 1,000,000 USD and the investment return period is 6 months.
Within 2008 3,000 tons of contaminated waste, 2,500 tons of dye mud were utilised; 3,500 tons of coal heat equivalent has been used in the rotating kiln process while the harmful wastes have been annihilated. The return attained against waste incineration for heat generation in 2008 in Bolu Cement has met 15 % of the annual fuel cost.
The project that was successfully completed was taken into circuit in February 2007 and was granted R&D support as it was found as an original project by TUBITAK.
The personnel who contributed to this patent that has been a remarkable contribution to the Turkish Cement Sector were rewarded by the President of the OYAK Cement Group Mr. Celalettin Çağlar with a plaque and a bag of gold.
